Not the bank text. Not the fact that I had kept records for nearly eight years while everyone else called it family and assumed that meant free labor. What they expected was the old version of me. The one who would swallow it. The one who would fix the problem quietly and make everybody else feel better about it later. I was that version for a long time. I had been that version since I was sixteen and Dad first handed me a wrench like it was a medal. I was that version when I stayed late to finish a rebuild while Jessica went out with friends and came back with a coffee and a comment about how great the shop looked on Instagram. I was that version when customers asked for Tyler by name and Dad waved them off like I was just part of the equipment. So after that dinner, I stopped being convenient.
